We fell in love in the summer...
06-25-2011 "...by the Spring time we were done"
A fitting announcement to open the second full length from Michael Benjamin Lerner, better known for his power pop vision, Telekinesis. Stories of youth driven by uncertainty and fleeting romance run sonically parallel to Matt's knack for creating melodies of instant attraction. It's the type of LP that may eventually fizzle but boy was it fun when those hooks were new.
A melting pot of indie music staples playfully decorates the new record sound in a tasteful homage that is nostalgic without crossing over into the criminally derivative.
Fact of the matter is, no groundbreaking moments are to be found anywhere on this LP; and we are thrilled for it. Mike knows the wheel was invented a long time ago and he really likes the way a classic spins. The songs of the 60's heard through the crackle and pop of vinyl magic is where he draws songwriting inspiration. A desire to build great tunes without changing the world. The first Telekinesis record was scattered. Several standout tracks including Rust, Great Lakes, and Coast Of Carolina would probably tempt you to sell your soul for a sing along but the rest of the album was not quite as powerful. The new record, 12 Desperate Straight Lines is a much more focused piece from start to finish with no real valleys to speak of. Recorded and engineered with the help of Chris Walla (guitarist for Death Cab For Cutie), the record has a darker edge this time around, emerging from Lerner's well documented car accident, medical condition, and relationship failings. The subtle shadow of his new songs seems to give him just enough balance to even out his sound, take a few more risks and most importantly, show significant growth as a budding songwriter in the early stages of what will hopefully be a very long career.
You may not find a lifelong mate when pressing play on a Telekinesis record but what u will find are "roll your window down" anthems, both charming and breezy as wind through your fingers.
