Grin & Bear It!

Poetic justice has a way of creeping up on the unsuspecting and slapping them right in the face with a giant claw and razor sharp nails. I admit, i have always cheered for the underdog. So when i heard that yesterday in Montana, a grizzly took out a bear hunter before going down in a blaze of glory i said to myself, "...death is whimsical today..."

One for the grizzly! The men are under investigation seeing how in the lower 48 states it's illegal to kill the threatened animal. A grizzly who brings a paw to a gun fight deserves some serious recognition. I herby deem September 16th, national grizzly day!

Something is a little off when you look at Annie Clark.  You sense an uncomfortable feeling like something out of place. Everything about her could be mistakenly interpreted as serious as easily as it could be accidental construed as a joke.  A waif with a bone structure reminiscent of the golden age in cinema starlet Audrey Hepburn, yet much more intricate, second guessing, especially in her signature dead pan. A soul of a living satire filled withe devilish wit and dangerous charm, St Vincent has always been a critics’ darling. Directly on the heels of her hot new record, Strange Mercy, we are greeted by a wonderful video for the single "Cruel." A tongue and cheek playground on the sanctity and insanity of marriage in all it's claustrophobic glory.

It always seemed like Mary Poppins was the female version of Willy Wonka. A wonderful character that children adored but at the same time you sensed something very devious and dark in her nature. Annie Clark has such a persona and uses her beauty, character, and unique appearance as battering rams to enhance her awkward swooning both vocally and visually. Her hooks are a mix of bright and dark pop lathered in musical theatre flare and quirky melody that may take a moment to burrow, but will undoubtedly win you over.
The tracks on Strange Mercy are brilliantly produced and meticulously arranged compositions. Its so very difficult to listen to modern instrumentation today and hear something truly unique. This record is full of little studio gems like the memorable fuzz drunken slide guitar of "Cruel." A symphonic delight of quirky sonic strokes on a canvas of more conventional "musical era" arrangement. If you like a spoon full of sugar with your medicine and don't feel guilty about being enchanted by a rouge grizzly bear then look no further then in front of your face. Carry on!
